"...for sleep comfort"
More than half a century has passed since the first Jensen mattresses saw daylight. On February 14th, 1947, to be precise.

Four men founded the Jensen & Birkeland company, which during its first month already produced all six different mattresses (made of horsehair and cotton).

Not a year later orders had greatly increased, but it was difficult in the postwar era to obtain enough materials to satisfy demand.

In 1949 Jensen & Birkeland obtained a licence granting them 3% of the yearly cotton import into Norway.

In the Fifties, the availability of raw materials greatly improved and a period of experimenting with new constructions and materials began.

The first Jensen mattress with a spring system stems from long before 1954 and quickly became a great success. Yearly turnover rose by 46,8%!

In 1959 the factory was expanded and in 1960 the name Jensen Møbler was acquired in combination with changes in management. The number of orders increased and in 1961 turnover exceeded 1 million Norwegian Crowns. Growth continued through the Sixties.

In 1974 Jensen bought new grounds in Svelvik (on Norway's southern shore) and in 1984 Jensen moved to the newly arisen factory there, just in time for the great waterbeds-hype in Scandinavia.

During a recent visit to Oslo, Luciano Pavarotti asked for a better mattress, in an XXL-format, at the hotel where he stayed. Jensen was called in by the hotel and produced the desired mattress in no time. After his visit to Oslo, the opera singer expressed his extreme gratitude and contentedness to Jensen.

Midway through the Eighties, it was no longer just the Norwegians who could enjoy Jensen's comfort. Within a few years Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Iceland followed.

Jensen Møbler had succesfully increased its market with the Baltic states, Spain and England. The small shipyard community in Svelvik had zich ontwikkeld tot een matrasmakers-gemeenschap.

Jensen now is one of the leading boxspring manufacturers of Scandinavia.

More than 200.000 beds a year are now made in Svelvik, near Oslo.

Many of the professionals at Jensen have learned their skills from their parents.

There is a lot of knowledge, pride and affinity with the product, that no machine on earth can manufacture.

Today, some 130 people work in the modern factory and Jensen continues product development, so to be able to meet the demand for sleeping comfort now and in the future.

This future-oriented view also expresses itself in new developments: in May 2004 the owner of Jensen Møbler AS - the Schage family - has transferred a majority of the shares to Swedish Hilding Anders International AB, a holding that has interests in multiple, mostly northern European, beds- and/or mattress-manufacturers.

Jensen Møbler views this share transfer as a positive development for its future and a befitting element of the development strategy to further internationalize the brand.
